The Portage Program
Portage NB, situated on Cassidy Lake, is a drug rehabilitation residential center. Operating in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, the program treats addicted adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18.
The Portage program is one of North Americas leading organizations in the treatment of abuse. Based on the therapeutic community model, Portage is a drug free facility, emphasizing self help and the creation of a positive environment with family support systems. This type of living experience is designed to rehabilitate, educate and reorient residents to a healthy new way of life.
Residents participate in group therapy on a daily basis to help develop their behaviour and attitudes which, combined with peer support, leads to greater self-awareness, confidence and self-respect. Regular recreation and sports activities complement the therapy and promote physical health and well-being.
Portage provides comprehensive family services through group and individual meetings to help parents understand and come to terms with the issues created by a drug-dependant family member. As a result, the family becomes an added source of support to the resident in the process of recovery.
Referral/Assessment Process: The role of the referral source, such as Probation Officer, Social Worker, Doctors, Mental Health Workers, Teachers, Youth Workers, Parents, and the Clients themselves (Ministry of Health Clients), or the referring agency, is critical throughout the treatment process.
For residents in New Brunswick, contact should be made with the facility at (506)839-1200. Following contact, an interview will take place and an assessment will be made.
