What Are “Bath Salts”?
A synthetic stimulant (designer drug) that is deliberately mismarketed as actual bath salts. This drug contains mephedrone and MDPV, which are a derivative of cathinon (found in the khat plant).
This drug appears in a pill format, which can be confused for Ecstasy and as a fine white, off-white, or slightly yellow powder in small plastic or foil packages and is ingested by:
Sniffing/snorting (main);
Orally;
Smoked; and
Injected.
These drugs are currently unregulated, which means that health care professionals have a difficult time treating the person. Additionally, this status also means that it is difficult to determine how this drug will affect an individual.
Some signs that a person has used “Bath Salts” include:
Mental
Agitation, insomnia, irritability, dizziness, depression, paranoia, delusions, suicidal thoughts, seizures, and panic attacks.
Physical
Rapid heart rate (may lead to heart attack or stroke), chest pains, nosebleeds, sweating, nausea and vomiting.
